WHAT’S ON? The latest lowdown of the up and coming youth dance events at The Lowry.
As March approaches, so does one of the most exciting months in The Lowry’s calendar. Okay, so every month is pretty great here but March is packed full of new and innovative performances from youth dance companies throughout Greater Manchester. You’ve heard about #danceanywhere and now it’s time to dance at The Lowry.
Youth dance companies provide a platform for young dancers to develop their skills and performance, before many progress onto a career in dance.
These are they dancers of the future…
Sun 9 March
First up we have Signatures 2014. Signatures has been running for 5 years and features youth dance companies from across Greater Manchester, presented by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and The Lowry.
Group leaders from the companies come together to learn a motif from a professional company. This year it’s 2Faced Dance Company, an all-male dance company, known for their trademark fusion of breaking and contemporary dance they have developed a visceral physicality which has led them to tour their work both nationally and internationally.
Once learned, they then return to their youth dance companies to create and develop their own interpretations inspired by the motif and focal choreography.
Come along on 9th March to see how these youth dance create a variety of different and dynamic pieces inspired by the same motif.
Salford Dance Explosion
Mon 10 – Wed 12 March
Salford Dance Explosion, now in its 6th year, has expanded to a dance festival spanning over 3 exciting evenings to showcase youth dance from around the area.
This year the festival will be host to over 500 dancers, all coming from different schools, and dance clubs to perform at The Lowry.
Salford Dance Explosion is organised by Karen Acton who runs the Lights, Camera, Acton musical theatre school in Worsley. The aim is to allow young people the opportunity to develop their skills, build their confidence and push their boundaries, whilst performing to a growing audience. The performance will include Radio Impulse, LMA’s popular young duo band from Salford for an explosive sing-along finale.
Sat 22 & Sun 23 March
The stage has been set (well very nearly) for our very own U.Dance NW2014 event.
It’s just over a month until NorthWest Dance plays host to the region’s largest youth dance festival.
Youth Dance England aims to champion excellence in dance for children and young people, providing opportunities for both young people taking their first pas de bourree to those starting out their professional training. U.Dance is a nationwide programme to support those who organise youth dance performances.
Over two nights, youth dance companies from all over the North West will be showcasing their very best talents in an exhilarating evening of exciting and varied dance. From Contemporary to Break dance, Bharata Natyam to theatre, and a fusion of everything in between, there really is something for everyone. The high standard and variety of dance mean you’ll be spoilt for choice.
It’s set to be a wonderful, dynamic and diverse weekend of dance and we hope to see you there.
Look out next week as we’ll be looking in detail at the next stage of a dancers career and the wealth of Graduate dance companys that are coming to The Lowry in March.
